Africa's Energy Challenge

More than 60% of Africa’s people do not have access to electricity, which is deemed essential for the education and connectivity of all people in order to advance in terms of literacy and economic development.

Part of the problem is that existing electricity grids are mostly outdated and too expensive to extend to rural communities.

The popular solution is found in micro-grids with solar and wind energy plus storage to provide for periods when solar and wind do not generate electricity.

Even in more advanced economies, national grids have challenges to balance the load, voltage and frequency in the presence of solar and wind energy generation, which are both inconsistent. Electricity storage is required to stabilise the grid.

Joubert Konsult offers a Thermal Energy Storage solution from a European vendor, which provides a low technology solution with the following features:

  • Capable of capturing and storing heat energy lost to the atmosphere – may be re-used as heat energy or electricity through steam.
